Girl Rising is a powerful and innovative new feature film that is part of 10x10’s global campaign to educate and empower girls. Room to Read is a proud partner of the 10x10 campaign and Girl Rising film.
Girl Rising, features the story of Suma Tharu, a Room to Read Girls' Education program participant from Nepal who has overcome a difficult past to become a thriving secondary school student.
About the fundraiser
As our first fundraiser, we organised the screening of the Girl Rising movie on Saturday, 1st Feb 2014, in support of Room to Read's Girl Education Program in Nepal. The aim was to raise $4000 - that is sufficient to support 3 girls through graduation (Grade 7 - 12).
How did we do?
We did not meet this initial goal, but were we pretty close. We raised $3041.35 (as on 9th Feb, 2014).
What did we learn?
We put all the experiance of our first event, the launch, the tough nuts and the other challenges we had - on our blog. Yeah, we set up a blog, we just had too much to share! Read up on this fundraiser.

Who we are
We are a team of - two. Yep, just two. I am Supriya Shakya and I have convinced my husband, Sudeep Shakya, into this as well. He is the backbone to every crazy project I have. We are both born and bred in Nepal but currently live in Sydney.
Why we are doing this
I heard about John Woods a long time ago when I was in Nepal and how he left his very lucrative job at Microsoft to help bring literacy in Nepal.
That always amazed me and since then I have been following his organisation Room To Read and the fantastic work that they do for developing nations including Nepal.
Although I had always wanted to contribute, I never really went beyond giving donations. But when I recently got the opportunity
to attend the Room to Read Australia Chapter's volunteers meeting, I was more inspired than ever.
And hence, embarked on launching a campaign of my own, which I call - a little, A LOT to support Room To Read's projects in Nepal.
We don't plan on starting a revolution to change the face of the world (although, we won't mind if it did). But we believe that we do have the power to bring change - Change for good. A little effort is all it takes.
